Jesus taught: “Blessed are the merciful” – St Matthew 5:7
Being merciful is just about being nice to others. When we look around the world at the people that we interact with I know that sometimes I’m focused on ‘me’ and how I can get ahead in this life by not letting anyone take advantage of me. I’ve sometimes too focused on Justice.
When we show mercy to others we are not being taken advantage of – we are helping to ease their burdens. Last week I was boarding a flight when a lady came up the aisle with a bag that was almost too big to fit in the overhead bins. Instead of judging them for not checking their big bag – I quietly asked if I could help her put it up in the overhead bins, as I knew she would not be able to without help.
I find that showing people mercy is generally easy – as long as we are willing to take the first step. We are rewarded immediately for our efforts.

Figure out a meaningful way to ease the person’s burdens.
